In order to specify the paints for corrosion protection such as Item No155 – such as PPG’s Sigma Etch, T Wash, or Item No168 – such as PPG’s SigmaDur 550, of structural steelwork in highway applications, the highways agency use a combination of item numbers for the primer, undercoat and top coat which stipulate the type of paint required.

This allows a selection of paint manufacturers to be considered when quoting for the works, ensuring that costs are always competitive. HAPAS certified, these BBA approved paint systems provide performance for over 15 years before major maintenance is required.

HAPAS – Highway Authorities Product Approval Scheme is a nationally recognised approval scheme for systems and products used in highways works.

Providing invaluable information for contractors and designers, this scheme includes data on product performance and project planning specifications for design and installation.

Metal components for Highways include road bridges, footbridges, lighting columns, overhead pylons, manhole covers and many more. Highways have extensive regulations when it comes to paints and coatings to ensure the safety of the public coupled with a long life expectancy, low maintenance products. Footbridges can also require anti slip coatings whether it is through GRP, high visibility nosing or steps or high aggregate sheeting.

It is important when it comes to maintenance and upkeep of bridges, that other authorities can be effected by your actions. For example, if a road bridge or footbridge is over water, the relevant water authority would need to be consulted to ensure any paint or coating does not come into conflict with wildlife or has any waterborne effects to the local environment.

Consequently, if the bridge or road is over a railway, the bridge may belong to the relevant association or owners of the railway rather than be part of Highways. You could find that rail associations work very differently to Highways and subsequently there may be different specifications or regulations on the suitable paints and coatings.
